5 REASONS WHY CREATIVITY NEEDS SPACE

If there is one thing I learned last year it’s that creativity needs space. And as another busy year drew to a close, I found it very difficult to focus and stay motivated - more than 50 flights, seven overseas trips, this blog, moving interstate, my new side hustle and freelancing can do that. So where does it thrive and why does creativity need space?

1. Creativity thrives when I am spending time in solitude, so I give it the space it needs by ensuring I have plenty of solo time.

2. Creativity thrives when I am being mindful, you know, doing only one thing at a time. I give it the space it needs space by being present in the moment.

3. Creativity thrives when I am exploring new environments, going on different hikes or going to new places, even a new café down the road from me on the Sunny Coast! I give my creativity space by taking a day hike in the wilderness or enjoying a long swim in the ocean.

4. Creativity thrives for me when I am unconstrained by time, so for me to be creative I need to throw away deadlines and give myself as much time as possible.

5. Creativity thrives when I am learning something new, so I give my creativity the space it needs by reading new books, watching documentaries and hanging out with creatives in other fields.

It must have been a sign from the universe, but when Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat invited me to join their Wellness Weekend, I decided it was time to give my creativity the space it needed by taking a break and enjoy a relaxing getaway.

Nestled in the Gold Coast Hinterland in Queensland, I spent an entire weekend (three days and two nights) switching off and indulging in restorative spa treatments, movement classes and relaxation, with delicious organic cuisine cooked for me. Yes that’s right – every single meal and snack was completely catered and 100% organic.

A lot of people go to Gwinganna for many reasons; pre-pregnancy getaway, general health and wellbeing, addiction, relationship breakdowns, hens weekend, time out from technology, girls trip, honeymoon, stress management, learning how to cook with organic ingredients, solitude, and in my case, creative space. Yet what I loved most about the weekend was that I was able to do as little, or as much, as I wanted.

So what did the Wellness Weekend entail for me?

I slept in, I indulged during the Dreamtime afternoons and booked myself in for a Sensitive Repair Facial and the exclusive Abyhang Fusion experience, I went swimming (yes there are two pools!), I made new friends, I left my mobile phone in my room, I went to a nutritionist, I watched the sunrise as I took part in a Qi Gong class, I bought the bestseller Gwinganna cook book, I went hiking, I handpicked fresh herbs from the garden, I caught up on reading, and I relaxed.

I also ate the best food I've ever experienced in my life. With dishes such as Poached Eggs with miso, creamed corn, asparagus and gomasio, and Orange & Fennel Fish Rillette with cucumber pickle, green salad and prawns, and Temphe Salad with vegetables, papaya and oven baked sweet potatoes, and Pumpkin & Brown Rice Porridge (I hassled the chef for the recipe!), and Poached Eggs with herbed sweet and white potato rosti and spinach sunflower cream,

And let me tell you, even this short dose of rest and relaxation played a vital role in my wellbeing, and boosted my energy levels with this easy escape. So much so, I am looking forward to 2016 with aplomb!
