TRAVEL PHOTO DIARY: HUACACHINA OASIS IN PERU

MG_3278.jpg

When I was going through my photos of the Huacachina Oasis this week, I realised it’s been a long time since I posted a Travel Photo Diary. It’s probably the best way for you to enjoy this unimaginable oasis from the comforts of your home, office or journey on train/bus/ferry. But first, did you know Huacachina is located in the Ica Province in the south west of Peru and features on the back of the 50 Nuevo Sol note? Such a couple of fun facts! The town itself is built around a small natural lake in the desert. However the best spot to take in the entire view of Huacachina is to jump on a dune buggy (which comes at a small cost) and get the locals to take you to a high point on the dunes. I encourage you to walk to higher ground where buggies can’t reach. It’s a massive effort and thankfully I soft sand run regularly so I was fine, but you will work up a sweat and I promise it’ll be worth it.

So when is the best time to visit? All year round and at sunset. The shadows cast over the dunes are in one word, breathtaking. I recommend you do the following:

1. Arrive at least two hours before sunset – you’ll want plenty of time to take photos of the town 2. Jump on a dune buggy and go for a wild spin around the dunes - the drivers go very fast so buckle up. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and be prepared to eat sand! 3. Head back to Huacachina to watch the sunset over the oasis 4. Following this, chase the sun to the far side of the sand dunes and watch an unforgettable sunset as it drops behind the horizon

If you're thinking of adventuring to Peru this year or have it on your bucket list, make sure you read my other stories on Peru here where you'll find stories, tips and guides, which will help you plan ahead and help you have an incredible holiday!
