TOP 10 AQUATIC EXPERIENCES ON THE SUNSHINE COAST

As some of you may know, last year I had a sea change and moved from the hustle and bustle of Sydney in NSW to the beautifully laid back Sunshine Coast in QLD. And to be honest, I haven’t looked back since. There is just something about life on the Sunshine Coast that really speaks to me – it’s relaxing, calm, laid back, and friendly. There is also a really strong entrepreneurial undercurrent, which was totally unexpected. Every opportunity I am home, I can always be found exploring the outdoors. Whether it’s discovering the many beautiful beaches that line the Sunshine Coast or uncovering hidden waterfalls on my many hiking adventures in the hinterland, I am constantly surprised by the amount of things to do on the Sunshine Coast. With this in mind, I thought I would write a little list post sharing my top 10 aquatic experiences on the coast - from the salt water of the ocean, to fresh water of the hinterland.

NOOSA NATIONAL PARK One of my most treasured things to do on the Sunshine Coast is to get up before sunrise, drive to Noosa and hike the coastline through Noosa National Park over to Alexandra Bay, or fondly referred to as ‘A Bay’ by the locals.

BUDERIM FALLS If there is one thing that consistently surprises me about the Sunshine Coast, it’s the amount of hidden waterfalls in the hinterland – there are so many of them. If you’re looking for a quick hike and a gorgeous waterfall, Buderim Falls is an absolute must.

PUMICESTONE PASSAGE It doesn’t matter if you are a novice or an experience paddler, kayaking on the Sunshine Coast is truly a year round experience. There are stacks of places to jump in a kayak, but I personally love kayaking at Pumicestone Passage in Caloundra.

SUNSHINE BEACH When I was younger, I spent my family holidays at Sunshine Beach. It’s the perfect beach to spend the day swimming with family and friends, and also exploring the cliffs which make up the southern end of Noosa National Park. It’s also a local favourite for surfing!

LITTLE COVE BEACH If you’re looking for a little bit of a luxury beach experience, you can’t go past Little Cove Beach. It’s my favourite spot on the Sunshine Coast because it’s a small protected bay which doesn’t have much parking close by, which means it’s usually less crowded than Noosa Main Beach. The view looking back towards Noosa Hill when swimming in the water is second to none!

RAINBOW BEACH Aptly named after the rainbow sands that make up Rainbow Beach, this spot is local favourite and the perfect destination for a day trip. A 4WD is a must to be able to drive on the pristine sandy beaches, just make sure you leave plenty of room for an esky full of beers and food. And make sure you make it all the way up to Double Island Point, which is pictured below!

THE BAYS AT COOLUM BEACH Depending on the time of year, expect to be surfing with Julian Wilson as the Bays offer some of his most favourite breaks in his home town of Coolum. The Bays are also protected from the elements, and are perfect for exploring on foot as you cross one bay over to the next. This also happens to be a favourite spot of mine to enjoy sunrise!

KONDALILLA FALLS Kondalilla Falls got its name from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘rushing waters’, which is a perfect description of this waterfall during the summer wet season. Take the Falls Circuit Track and rock hop until you can see and swim underneath the cascading falls. It’s absolutely stunning. This is also the first section of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk, something that’s very high up on my To Do List this year!

BOLOUMBA CREEK This is a little secret spot of mine and I am totally happy to share this with you! Located in Conondale National Park, the clear turquoise waters of Boloumba Creek get me every time.

MALENY BOTANIC GARDENS The privately owned Maleny Botantic Gardens are completely lush and the perfect activity to do rain, hail or shine. With over 4km of walking tracks, which meander around thousands of different plants and water features, the Botanic Gardens are situated on one hundred and ten acres, and surrounded by a magnificent rainforest with panoramic views of the Glass House Mountains.
