I fell deep in love with Tasmania last year when I was lucky to visit twice – first in January and then again in July. If you’ve never visited before, you can get an idea of its beauty by visiting the official Tasmania Instagram account here, where even some of my photos have been featured. So if you do find yourself in the pretty state of Tasmania, make sure you include Port Arthur in Australia on your list of things to see and do. Located approximately 60 kilometres south east of Hobart, Port Arthur is the perfect day trip if you’re basing your travels in and around the capital city. And if you need further convincing, below are my top three reasons why you need to visit Port Arthur.

1: IT’S TASMANIA’S TOP TOURIST ATTRACTION Now don’t let this turn you off from visiting. Port Arthur in Australia is not like Disneyland in terms of visitors. And that’s what makes Tasmania so enchanting, because whilst it is the state’s top tourist attraction, you won’t be lining up for anything. Promise!

2: IT USED TO BE A CONVICT SETTLEMENT Port Arthur is a small town and former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula. Representing the best surviving examples of convict life in Australia, Port Arthur is both haunting and beautiful. Make sure you jump on the MV Marana for the 30 minute boat tour as this gives you a really good idea of how large the settlement is and how hard the life of the convicts was.

3: IT’S WORLD HERITAGE LISTED Port Arthur is one of Australia’s most significant heritage areas. An open air museum, Port Arthur forms part of the Australian Convict Sites and consists of 11 remnant penal sites originally built within the British Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries.
