MUST DO: EAT AT THE SEA CIRCUS CAFE IN SEMINYAK, BALI

Oh Mexican. Mexican, Mexican, Mexican. I know I am not alone when I count Mexican food high up on my list of favourite cuisines. So it might come as a surprise to learn that some of the best Mexican food I’ve enjoyed was in Bali. It was a gorgeous day in Seminyak, the sun was fierce and the humidity high, and I was free to do whatever I wanted. After a leisurely swim in the crystal clear water of the garden pool at the Royal Beach Hotel (see here), I ventured down to the main reception where concierge, who organised a taxi, greeted me.

Settling on the fare, which was only AUD $2.50, I jumped into the taxi and asked the driver to take me to Sea Circus for lunch. A staple for many visitors in Seminyak, I had been told they have the best variety of margaritas in Bali.

Nestled a hop and a skip from Body Works which offer the best massages in Seminyak and Motel Mexicola, Sea Circus is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Offering a seriously fresh approach to Mexican cuisine, several friends had recommended a visit to Sea Circus.

When I stepped out of the taxi, I was welcomed by the colourful façade of Sea Circus and by their friendly staff who advised to take a seat wherever I felt most comfortable. Choosing a cosy table that looked out onto the rest of the restaurant, I noticed the patrons were predominantly Australian with a few French thrown in as well.

I was handed a bright menu and immediately chose the passion fruit and guava margarita that consisted of tequila, passion fruit, guava, triple sec and lime. I don’t usually drink the sour varieties of margaritas so was pleasantly surprised with the variety of margaritas, and wondered why more restaurants and bars don’t offer these back home in Australia.

For lunch I chose the fish tacos with mango salsa and the snapper ceviche with flour tortilla chips. By far the freshest Mexican I’ve had, the portions were surprisingly big for the price. I am being polite here; basically the servings are huge and the meals are inexpensive.

After digging into the fish tacos the bottom of the glass from my passion fruit and guava margarita materialised in front of me. Time to order another one! This time I ordered the strawberry margarita that matched perfectly with the snapper ceviche. And after a couple of sips I began to feel a little buzz; those margies sure pack a punch.
