HOW TO BUILD A CABIN: MY INSPIRATIONS ON INTERIOR COLOUR PALETTE

As you guys know, I am currently saving to buy land and build a cabin on the Sunshine Coast in Australia. I’ve met with Archiblox, an Australian team of modular architects who will assist with the sustainable design and build of my cabin. I will soon be meeting with a bank manager to get a better understanding of how much money I need for a mortgage but also to debunk some of the myths and terms about financing my first property, which I plan on sharing with you. However most recently, my better half and I have been talking about potted plants and our current apartment. A lot. We’re very conscience about what we buy now and how it can work in the cabin. The other day I couldn’t help myself but giggle when he called me to get my opinion on potting soil for my latest Bird of Paradise purchase and if we should buy some Fiddle Leaf Figs as well. What a catch!

But it has me thinking about colour palettes and what we both like. When you live with a better half you really need to make sure you can both agree or are willing to compromise when making decisions affecting the living environment.

I often find there are many synergies with someone’s wardrobe style and interior style. I almost always wear black, white, grey and navy. This colour palette is very similar to my interior style - with the addition of earthy greens from plants. I love mixing different tones and textures of green. I’m also a minimalist and heavily influenced by the sophisticated simplicity of Scandinavian form and function. Luckily, Jason and I both have similar wardrobe and interior styles, so we’ve had a lot of success with our space.

I’ve recently been spending some time on Pinterest and have been garnering inspiration from around the world of cabins, spaces, interiors and outdoors that are inspiring our cabin design. You can dig really deep into each album to see what I love - Cabins, Kitchens, Bedrooms, Workspaces, Living Rooms, Bathrooms, Fireplaces, Lighting, Furniture, Flooring, Rugs, Artwork, Indoor Plants, Outdoor Showers and Outdoor Baths.

And since I’ve noticed our wardrobe and living areas are influenced by the colour palette I mentioned earlier, I have started collating images on Pinterest based on colour and texture – the album is called Colour Palette. I would love you to check it out – it’s a clear indication of the direction we’re heading towards!

I also want to caveat these albums; they are more than a place to store pretty images. They are being used with a functional purpose to heavily inspire and influence the design and interior of the cabin. When we do get to design phase of the cabin interior with Archiblox, we will have all of these resources available to us. Which, in the end, will save a lot of precious time. Above and below are a few images I’ve been collecting for the Colour Palette album.
